About Me

My love for wood and craftsmanship began when I was a little boy. I would “help” my grandfather with various handyman projects, but woodworking always seemed to intrigue me. I remember my grandfather always said that working with wood is nicer than metal because you get to work with nice smelling and soft material. Coming from what was once a living tree I always wonder what this wood has witnessed throughout its existence as a tree. What creatures lived among its branches. Was it stand alone tree or part of a forest. In case of old furniture made of trees that lived long ago I wonder what type of people visited the tree. Did kids climb and play in its branches or lovers sit in its shade? The secrets the wood holds from past lives will always remain a mystery, but is something you can wonder about as you sit on your favorite chair.

My passion for wood and art lead me to study Artistic Woodwork, Cabinet Making and Design in Europe. European furniture has a several hundred year history and the trade of cabinetmaking and woodworking has not only been passed down from generation to generation but is also taught at specialized schools.

After my studies I worked in Prague, Czechia for many years, retoring historical furniture from both private and public collections, often on display in castles and cathedrals dating back as far as the 14th century. It was a great experience and during that time I deepened my knowledge, skills, and passion for restoration work.

The word "xylem" is derived from the Greek word ξύλον (xylon), meaning "wood"
